Pigmentation Treatment Q & A

What causes brown spots on your skin?

A number of issues can lead to brown spots developing on your skin. If you have light skin, many pigmentation issues, such as freckling, sun spots, and blotchy skin patches, can result from overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

For people with darker skin tones, brown pigmentations are often caused by melasma. These brownish spots develop across the face, including on the:

  • Nose
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Forehead
  • Upper lip

If you’ve had an injury to your skin, dark spots may form from increased pigment production. Called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, these spots most commonly occur with acne, psoriasis, and burns.

How do laser treatments improve pigmentation?

At Southwest Laser Skin Care, Dr. Li often recommends picosecond aesthetic laser treatments with the CynosureⓇ PicoSureⓇ system. The innovative PicoSure laser uses short-pulse light energy to penetrate into your skin and disrupt the particles that cause pigmentation and skin darkening.

The laser targets these particles and, by using pressure, causes them to shatter into small molecules. Your body then naturally processes them, removing the ink from your skin.

Although the removal of pigmentation and brown spots are permanent, new spots can form, especially if you don’t change your sun-soaking habits.

What should you expect during laser treatments for brown spots?

You don’t have to prep for your laser procedure. Once you arrive at Southwest Laser Skin Care, Dr. Li prepares the PicoSure device, then administers the laser therapy over your treatment area.

Although most patients report that the laser treatment for pigmentation feels like rubber bands snapping on your skin and causes minimal to no discomfort, Dr. Li may offer you a numbing cream before the procedure to give you the best experience possible.

Although the procedure time varies depending on the size of your treatment area, most sessions range between 10 and 15 minutes. You’re free to leave immediately after the treatment and no downtime is required.

For optimal results, Dr. Li may recommend multiple treatment sessions, scheduled 2-6 weeks apart.

If dark spots make you want to cover your skin, eliminate them with laser skin treatments at Southwest Laser Skin Care. Call the office or book your appointment online today.
